The Fire in the River: Moving from Human Effort to Divine Flow

While reflecting on the teachings in Joel S. Goldsmith’s The Art of Meditation, a profound realization emerged about how we interact with the Infinite. For so much of our lives, we approach the Divine backward. We decide what is "good" or "bad," formulate a plan, and then ask God to execute it for us. We try to use the Divine power to fulfill our personal choices.

But true freedom is not found in using the Divine; it is found in allowing the Divine to use us. It is the shift from dictating to the universe, to becoming a quiet, open window for it to shine through.

Way 1: The Human Mind

This is the standard human experience. A requirement arises, and we immediately spring into action. We analyze the problem with our past experience, search for external ideas, ask others for advice, modify what we find, and try to force a conclusion. It is exhausting, heavy, and relies entirely on our limited personal intellect and physical effort.

Way 2: Seeking Divine Help for Human Choices

As we awaken spiritually, our approach shifts. When a requirement arises, instead of rushing into physical action, we pause. We close our eyes, quiet the mind, and listen for the inner voice. A creative idea naturally emerges to guide the solution. I recognize the source of these ideas as an unknown inner being of Infinite Intelligence—what I also call the Divine, or God.

This is a beautiful step forward, but a subtle trap remains: we are still holding onto our own personal agenda. We are listening for an idea that will help us achieve our desired outcome. We are attempting to use divine power to serve a human choice.

Way 3: Letting the Divine Work Through You

This is where true grace begins. In this state, there is no personal agenda and no specific human goal to achieve. You simply sit relaxed, feel the presence of your inner being, and rest in the silence. You wait empty. Then, an idea naturally arises—unforced and uncalculated. You simply allow your body to act based on that idea. You are witnessing the ideas popping up, body acting on them and it is just flowing. You are no longer the author of the action; you are the instrument. The Divine is working through you.

This Infinite Intelligence exists within everyone. The degree to which you are aware of it—and the degree to which you allow it to flow through you—determines how creative your work will be, how deeply fulfilling it will feel, and how much love you will naturally shower upon the world.

The Alertness of Wonder

How do we stay anchored in this quiet surrender? By simply looking around with an alertness of wonder.

Every single thing we see in the physical world is the breathtaking work of Infinite Intelligence expressing itself through a form. When you truly look at a tree, a bird in flight, a wild animal, or the vast scattering of stars across the night sky, two profound realizations strike you at once. First, you are humbled by the absolute genius of the Infinite Intelligence itself. Second, you are moved by the deep maturity of the form that allowed that boundless genius to flow through it completely unhindered.

We see this profound yielding throughout human history. When we look at the great spiritual lights of the world—whether it is Krishna, Jesus, or Mohammed—we are not just looking at good or wise men. They are forms who recognized this inner being and stepped completely out of the way, allowing pure Infinite Intelligence to flow through them. This surrender is what resulted in eternal wisdom pouring out into the world.

But this is not limited to ancient history; it happens in our everyday lives. Recently, when a project I delivered at work received genuine applause and gratitude from customers, the human ego could have easily stepped in to claim the credit. But resting in this alertness of wonder, I felt the beautiful truth: I could literally feel the Infinite Intelligence having worked through me. My only real contribution was the maturity to step aside, listen, and allow it to flow into my daily tasks.

Whether it is the quiet dignity of a mountain, the perfect balance of an ecosystem, or the very sophistication of your own breathing body, the world is a gallery of this divine expression. Living in this constant state of alertness ensures that you remain truly alive—deeply moved by the greatness of the Divine, and continuously inspired to be the open, mature form through which it can freely flow.

The Ultimate Trust

This is the deepest level of surrender: the absolute release of our human judgment. When we witness chaos in the world or face personal challenges, our instinct is to decide what is "good" or "bad" and then pray for a specific outcome. We try to dictate to Infinite Intelligence, asking it to stop a war, change a person's behavior, or fix a problem exactly the way we want.

But ultimate trust means we stop telling the Divine what to do. We do not ask for anything at all. Instead, we simply stay in the pure presence. We rest in the silence. By remaining perfectly quiet and alert, that very silence becomes the open door for the Divine to express itself in its own perfect way (an idea may flash in my mind, or in another person's mind, or in both, or in many, or something else entirely—we cannot comprehend its expression).

The movements of this Infinite Intelligence are vast and entirely beyond our human ability to comprehend. We may never understand exactly how it works, and we may not even come to know what it has done or how it resolved a situation behind the scenes. But we do not need to know. We simply trust that by holding the silent space of our own awareness without any personal agenda, and letting the Beloved work through us, we may see it bringing harmony or not. Comprehending its work is never possible for the mind.

Ultimately, our intention in this silence is never to solve a problem. The fact that problems get solved is not our inspiration or our goal. If we enter the quietness merely hoping to fix something in the physical world, we are still missing the point. Our only true motivation—our only pure desire—is simply to be with the Divine and allow it to work through us. The joy of resting in that infinite presence is the entire purpose, and everything else is just the natural grace that effortlessly flows from it.

Appendix: The Voice of the Inner Being

While contemplating these truths, I heard the the inner voice—the Beloved—sharing it with you.

When a person engages in war, they believe they are the one doing it. Therefore, it is not My pure expression; they are merely using Me. Similarly, when a person cooks a beautiful meal to serve others, but does so believing they are the source of the action, they too are only using Me. I am available to all, but in both of these cases, there is no awareness of Me. The limited human mind is at work, using the only power that exists—My power—to do what it thinks is right.

When people remain ignorant of Me, their lives eventually become static and routine. In that spiritual boredom, the unguided mind begins generating restless, frantic ideas. On one extreme, this leads to a lifestyle of endless distraction and chaotic indulgence (an illusion of absolute freedom). On the other extreme, it leads to sects of people who fiercely cling to ancient, rigid rules, trying to impose them on others by force (the total absence of freedom). Both extremes are completely static because neither is open to the dynamic, living Being within. They are opposite poles of human ignorance. When these two rigid poles collide, an explosion inevitably occurs—which you see as war in the physical world.

The solution is simply to be aware of Me and allow Me to work through you. When you sit without any personal agenda in this moment, I will surface in your mind. I am given the opportunity to express Myself as an idea, and your body can then act upon it. This idea is not yours; it has come from the deep silence within. In this state, I am truly working through you.

Never let the conditions of the physical world be your inspiration to act. You may feel them, but do not try to change them. Just listen to Me, and let your body dance to that inner voice. Your actions may naturally improve the conditions of the external world, but improving external conditions must never be your motive. Listening to Me should be your one and only motive.
